communicoupling
"Descend and maintain eight thousand." The pilot does not say "okay" — she reads the clearance back, number by number, and the controller certifies the read-back. Aviation ritualized what Herbert Clark showed running under all conversation: a contribution is complete only when both parties hold evidence it was understood — well enough for current purposes. The "uh-huh", the relevant next turn, the phrase repeated verbatim: each is a receipt, and the certified residue — common ground — is what every later turn silently builds on.
Most talk collects no receipts. The speaker presents, the hearer does not object, and non-objection gets booked as understanding — a ledger entry only one party signed. Unsigned entries sit latent in the hearer's model and surface weeks later, priced at whatever was built on top of them. Clark and Brennan's account is an economics: evidence costs turns, latent errors cost repairs, and the parties tune how much certifying they buy — least collaborative effort, minimizing the pair's total bill. The instrument below prices that dial and finds where it should rest.
joint custody · held with MatheMetaphor's common knowledge — the tower of "I know that you know that I know" is the limit this accumulation points at. Grounding is how finite, noisy talk climbs toward it, floor by certified floor, always stopping at "well enough."
the mechanism
A speaker must move K = 20 items into common ground. Each turn presents one; it miscarries with probability noise — more if misunderstandings already stand, since every contribution is built on the ground as the hearer holds it: each latent error adds a further 6% chance of misconstrual. The hearer's policy is the effort dial: with probability e the hearer displays what landed, and the display costs 0.18 + 0.55·e of a turn — rising with e, because certifying often means climbing Clark and Brennan's ladder of evidence from cheap backchannel toward verbatim read-back. A displayed misconstrual is caught on the spot and re-presented. Silence closes the item as understood, which at nonzero noise is sometimes false: the item enters the speaker's ledger, and the error enters nobody's.
Latent errors surface after the conversation believes itself finished, at R turns each — inflated 30% per other error still standing, because repair is itself talk conducted over corrupt ground. The bill takes the shape Clark predicted, and the sweep measures it. At noise 0.15 and R = 4 the cost curve bottoms at e* = 0.70: 37.9 turns. Certifying nothing costs 55.0 turns and banks 4.8 latent errors; certifying everything costs 40.7 in ceremony. And the optimum tracks the world: hold R at 3 and raise noise from 0.05 to 0.30, and e* moves from 0.25 to 0.85; drop noise to 0.10 but raise R to 12, and e* climbs to 0.95. How much certifying to buy is a measurable fact about the channel and the stakes — never a courtesy.
what to try
At the default line, drag effort from 0 to 1 and watch the blue marker ride the gold curve: 55.0 turns at silence, 40.7 at full read-back, 37.9 at the measured minimum e* = 0.70. The U is lopsided — here, silence overshoots the minimum by 17.1 turns, ceremony by 2.8.
Hold repair at 3 and sweep noise from 0.05 to 0.30. The optimum migrates from e* = 0.25 to e* = 0.85: each display now catches more per turn it costs. The same hearer habits are thrift on a clear line and negligence on a bad one.
Set noise low — 0.10 — and repair at 12. The optimum lands at e* = 0.95: 38.4 turns, against 85.4 if the team nods along. When one late error costs twelve turns, near-total certification is the cheap option. That arithmetic is why checklists exist.
the certified residue
Read-back protocols are this instrument with the effort dial pinned by policy: aviation, pharmacy orders, the surgical checklist — domains that measured their R and stopped trusting silence. Teachback is the same purchase made in medicine, one rung higher on the evidence ladder. At the cheap end sit the backchannels good listeners emit without noticing — and the meeting that closes on "any questions?", hears none, and moves on has bought its grounding at e = 0 and will pay retail when the misunderstanding surfaces in production. Clark and Brennan's sharpest observation is that every medium reprices the ladder: face to face, nods and uh-huhs are nearly free; over text they vanish, silence becomes ambiguous, and the competent correspondent compensates by certifying explicitly — the read-back typed out, because the cheap rungs are gone.
What the certifying accumulates is common ground: the stock of propositions each party may treat as shared basis and build on without restating. Its limit case — everyone knows, everyone knows that everyone knows, all the way up — is common knowledge, the theorem held on the MatheMetaphor side of this page's custody arrangement. Coordination proofs demand that full tower; flesh-and-blood conversation can only buy evidence, floor by floor, at the prices this instrument charges. Grounding is the toll road between the two: no finite spend reaches the top, and Clark's criterion tells you where to stop climbing — at the floor that bears the weight of your current purpose, and no higher.
the mapping
| In the model | In the world |
|---|---|
| noise | Mishearing, drifting attention, ambiguous reference — "the Tuesday meeting," and there are two Tuesdays. |
| effort e | The hearer's evidence policy: how often "uh-huh", a paraphrase, a verbatim read-back. |
| 0.18 + 0.55·e | The ladder of evidence — attention, backchannel, demonstration, display. Stronger receipts take longer. |
| silence booked as success | The non-objection trap: "any questions?", none, onward. |
| latent error | "I thought you meant the other Tuesday" — weeks later, under everything built since. |
| repair R | How far downstream the error surfaces: a mislabeled file, or a dose already given. |
| e* | Least collaborative effort: buy exactly the certainty the error is worth — checklist in the tower, shrug at the café. |
where it tears
The model treats every display as diagnostic: an ack either certifies a good construal or exposes a bad one. Real hearers nod through fog — the student's "makes sense," the phatic "uh-huh" that certifies attendance rather than understanding. Weak evidence over-certifies, which is why high-stakes practice climbs to displays that cannot be faked: the read-back, the demonstration, the teachback. The dial here buys real certainty; in life, some rungs of the ladder are painted on.
Real grounding is graded and purpose-relative: "well enough for current purposes" names a moving threshold, tightening mid-conversation the moment purposes shift — the same construal certified for chat would need re-grounding to sign a contract on. Items here are binary and independent, and the grounding criterion sits fixed inside the constants. The model prices the tradeoff; it cannot move its own bar.
No finite pile of receipts yields common knowledge — level upon level, without end — and this page's custody partner proves coordination sometimes needs exactly that. Clark's escape is the shared basis: treat copresence or mutual membership as licensing the whole tower at once, a heuristic that works until it doesn't — as everyone knows who ever said "but you were standing right there." Grounding buys floors; the top is an idealization both parties politely pretend to occupy.
