The path was voted
into existence by feet.

Every campus has them — the dirt shortcuts cutting the corners off the paved right angles, worn through the grass by nobody in particular. No committee proposed them, no one approved them, yet together they form a sensible network, better fitted to where people actually go than the plan beneath. Who designed it? Everyone; no one; the ground itself kept the minutes.

The mechanism has a name: stigmergy, coined by Pierre-Paul Grassé in 1959 to explain how termites build cathedrals without an architect. Coordination happens through traces left in a shared medium — each agent's action modifies the environment, and the modified environment redirects the actions that come after. No agent addresses another; the work in progress is the message. Helbing, Keltsch and Molnár made human trails exact in 1997: walkers trade directness against the comfort of trampled ground, trampling reinforces, vegetation regrows — and the field settles into trail networks that are compromises among everyone's destinations, including trails no individual would have chosen whole.

The ground keeps the minutes

One number per square of grass is enough.

Grassé was watching termites rebuild a broken nest when he saw the trick. A termite deposits a pellet of soil, and the pellet itself — its shape, its scent — becomes the stimulus for the next deposit. No termite instructs another; each reads the state of the work, and the work replies. He called it stigmergie: incitement by mark. The instrument runs the human version. Each cell of the field carries a single number, its wear G. A footstep raises it toward bare earth by I·(1−G); every quiet step of regrowth lowers it by ρ·G. A walker bound for a gate looks up to σ cells ahead in a fan of directions and scores each one — (1−κ) for holding its own bearing, κ for the comfort of worn ground — then takes the best step. The step becomes wear, and the wear becomes someone else's reason.

The curved trails are the signature. Between three gates, each traveller's private optimum is a straight line — but a straight line used by one pair alone may fall below the regrowth threshold and vanish. Merging with a neighbouring route keeps a trail alive at the cost of a small detour for everyone on it. So the network settles where the ground can afford it: a compromise graph, mean detour around ×1.1 in the moderate regime, that no walker proposed and every walker maintains. And when writing cannot outpace forgetting — few feet, fast grass — no network forms at all. Coordination through a medium has a minimum wage.

What to try

Three experiments in soil.

Starve the ground

Set ρ = 1.00% and traffic = 5. Worn area pins at zero: each print fades before the next foot confirms it. Now lower ρ a notch at a time — near 0.50% the first trail survives, and by 0.25% a thin network holds. The threshold is a race between writing and forgetting.

Buy the straight line

From the campus regime, push traffic to 40 and drop κ to 0.55: every pair of gates earns a private trail and mean detour collapses to ×1.00. Return to traffic = 8, κ = 0.70 and the lines re-merge into shared curves near ×1.08 — the price of coordination, paid in footsteps.

Grooves into ruts

Raise κ to 0.85 with sight = 12. Walkers all but stop consulting their own bearing: existing trails deepen, new ones stop forming, and mean detour climbs past ×1.5 as everyone rides the old grooves. A medium obeyed too faithfully stops learning.

Institutions as sediment

Most of what organises us was never decided.

Look past the grass and the model is a portrait of how groups actually run. The org chart says how work should travel; the trails record how it does — the colleague everyone actually asks, the form worn smooth by a thousand small completions, the FAQ that accreted answer by answer, the precedent that hardens from citation. Each is stigmergic: every act that leaves the task easier for the next person is a footstep, and the accumulated footsteps steer whoever comes after, with no meeting and no memo. The regrowth rate is real too. Grass is wiki-rot, staff turnover, expiring context — an institution persists exactly as long as its trace-laying outpaces its medium's forgetting.

The dials translate into working advice. Raising κ is a culture that defers to precedent; lowering it is one that rewards fresh bearings — and the field shows both failure modes, blankness and ruts. The detour factor prices something usually invisible: everyone on a shared path walks slightly further than their own straight line, and that unnegotiated, mostly unnoticed surcharge is what coordination costs when nobody meets. Some universities now pave last — leave a new quad grassed for a year, then lay asphalt where the feet voted. That is the planner's overlay run in the right order: evolved order first, designed order as ratification.

Neighbouring machines

Order without a designer, three ways.

Desire paths belong to a family of machines that make pattern without intention. In Schelling's grid, order condenses out of moves nobody meant as policy; here it condenses out of marks nobody meant as messages. Cultural dissemination shows imitation doing the same sedimentary work on tastes rather than turf. And path dependence is this page's third caveat grown to full size: the trail that begins as accident and retires as law.

Where it tears

Limits.

The medium records only what it can record.

A trail says where, and nothing else. Values, exceptions, reasons, warnings — none of them leave footprints, so trail-wisdom is silent about why the path bends and when it should not be followed. A rule whose justification matters — safety, law, fairness — cannot travel by stigmergy; the ground carries the habit and drops the reason. Institutions built purely from sediment are exactly this knowledgeable, and exactly this mute.

The tyranny of the median walker.

The network optimises the aggregate of past traffic, and only that. A destination visited rarely never crosses the wear threshold, so the people who need it get no path — the field is generous to the frequent and blind to the rare, a quiet tyranny built into the arithmetic. Drop traffic in the instrument and watch which trails die first: always the minority routes. Any system steered by use alone inherits this.

Sediment cannot repent.

An early trail laid by accident attracts feet, and the feet make it "right" — path dependence in literal soil. The ground's memory has no mechanism for revision beyond slow forgetting, and a well-used error is precisely the one that never gets to be forgotten. When the world shifts — move a gate and watch — the field does relearn, but only at rate ρ, and everyone walking in the meantime walks the old mistake.
