A ship enters harbor through observations, shouted bearings, written fixes, instruments, charts, practiced handoffs, and several partial views. No individual contains the full computation. Yet the organized assembly steers.

Edwin Hutchins's distributed cognition changes the unit of analysis: instead of asking what one person represents internally, ask how information moves through a system of people and artifacts. Communication and tools are parts of the team's thinking.

Information is transformed as it travels.

The instrument passes task state through a sequence of specialized operations. Workload introduces processing errors. Handoff reliability carries the current state between people; artifacts preserve an independent representation that can prevent or repair some corruption. The comparison chain asks one person to retain and transform everything under greater cognitive load.

The claim is not that a group has a mystical supermind. It is that some cognitive processes are best described at the scale of the organized system: representations propagate, are transformed, checked, and stored across media and bodies.

the social payoff

Change the arrangement and you change what can be thought.

Checklists, dashboards, whiteboards, code, shared vocabulary, and spatial layout are not optional containers for an already completed thought. They determine which intermediate states survive, which errors become visible, and which transformations can be coordinated.

This differs from actor-network theory in emphasis. Actor-network analysis follows heterogeneous associations that stabilize order; distributed cognition follows the propagation and transformation of representations through a sociotechnical system.

where it tears

Limits.

System success can conceal unequal burdens.

A cockpit may perform well because one role absorbs interruption, translation, and repair. System-level accuracy does not distribute credit or strain fairly.

The boundary remains an analytical choice.

Calling the notebook part of cognition is useful only when its coupling is reliable and causally active. Not every nearby object belongs to the cognitive system.

Artifacts carry histories.

A form or display can preserve old categories along with useful state. External memory stabilizes bias as readily as truth.
