We adapt to a world
we altered.

Beavers adapt to streams by building dams that transform the stream. Earthworms alter the soil in which later earthworms develop. Humans build roads, schools, markets, and categories, then grow up inside the selective pressures those constructions create.

Niche construction makes adaptation reciprocal: organisms modify environments, and modified environments feed back on organisms and descendants. The inherited condition may be ecological rather than genetic—a changed world waiting for the next generation.

the mechanism

Selection has sources inside the population.

The model tracks a population trait and an environmental state. The trait modifies the environment; persistence carries part of that modification forward; selection moves the trait toward the current environment. Variation supplies the capacity to respond but contracts as feedback strongly aligns the population with its constructed conditions.

The point is not that organisms choose their evolution. Construction can be deliberate, incidental, beneficial, or harmful. What changes is the causal diagram: environment is no longer an independent backdrop. It is partly an outcome of prior organisms and a cause acting on later ones.

the social payoff

Institutions are ecological inheritances too.

A grading system changes study behavior; the resulting students make the system appear necessary. A road produces settlement, which produces traffic, which justifies the road. Built and institutional environments transmit constraints across cohorts without anyone restating the original decision.

This connects structuration to longer temporal feedback. Structure is both medium and outcome, while niche construction emphasizes the altered environment inherited by subsequent actors.

where it tears

Limits.

Social inheritance is not biological inheritance.

The analogy clarifies feedback across generations but does not make institutions genes or cultural change natural selection.

Construction has spillovers.

One population can improve its own niche while degrading another's. A single trait–environment pair hides conflict and ecological networks.

Fit can become fragility.

Close adaptation to a stabilized niche may reduce the variation needed when conditions change. Match is not resilience.
