Every couple knows both. In one, you match each other — volume for volume, grievance for grievance — until something breaks. In the other, one goes quiet and the other grows louder, and each makes the other more so: the silence deepens the shouting, the shouting deepens the silence. Gregory Bateson, watching Iatmul ceremonial life in the 1930s, claimed these are the only two shapes an escalating relationship can take — and that both propel themselves.
He called the process schismogenesis: a process of differentiation in the norms of individual behaviour resulting from cumulative interaction (Naven, 1936; revisited in Steps to an Ecology of Mind, 1972). Symmetrical schismogenesis runs on likeness — boasting answers boasting, escalation matches escalation, an arms race. Complementary schismogenesis runs on opposites — dominance calls out submission, exhibition calls out spectatorship, nagging calls out withdrawal, and every response invites more of what produced it. Unchecked, both run away; Bateson's checks were combining the two modes, external constraint, and reciprocal exchange.
Below, two agents A and B react to each other under a mode dial that runs from pure matching to pure opposition. Watch the runaway ray of the symmetrical quarrel, the widening wedge of the complementary one, and the narrow band in the middle where the quarrel dies of its own accord.
The mechanism made exact
Give each partner a single signed number: intensity. Positive is assertion — volume, boasting, armament, display. Negative is retreat — silence, deference, withdrawal. Each agent answers the other's level with reactivity g, and the mode coefficient c decides what an answer is. With c = +1, A moves toward more of whatever B just did: like begets like, the pair climbs the diagonal together, and the asymmetry readout stays pinned near zero. With c = −1, each answers with the opposite: B's silence pulls A louder, A's loudness pushes B quieter. That mode amplifies the difference between the two — the tiny initial gap between near-identical people decides who becomes the loud one — which is why Bateson's own word for the process is differentiation. Both modes share one growth rate, λ = |c|·√(gAgB) − d, where d is the ordinary cooling that lets an unprovoked mood fade. When λ is positive, the loop feeds itself, and nothing inside a pure mode ever stops it.
Bateson's checks enter as three levers. Mixing the modes shrinks |c| toward zero: the impulse to match and the impulse to oppose cancel, and below |c| = d/√(gAgB) even ferociously reactive partners are stable. Fatigue makes intensity cost more the higher it climbs, and can park a runaway short of the breaking line — a chronic quarrel rather than a fatal one. And the ritual flip — the naven ceremony — exchanges the modes mid-run. The algebra behind it is exact: flipping the sign of c swaps the system's growing and decaying directions, so the whole accumulated spiral lands on the axis that drains it. The ceremony spends the escalation at a stroke.
What to try
Press The shouting match (μ = 0, g = 2.2): the trail rides the diagonal, asymmetry stays near 0.00, and the pair breaks in about two time units. Then Nag and withdraw (μ = 1): the trail bends into opposite quadrants — one loud, one gone — and asymmetry climbs past 5 at the break.
Start the shouting match, and while it climbs drag μ toward the middle. Past μ ≈ 0.41 at these gains, |c|·√(g_Ag_B) drops below d = 0.4: the verdict flips to stable, the detector reads ∞, and the quarrel decays. Or rescue with fatigue instead — e = 0.8 parks it at a chronic plateau.
Press The naven ceremony and watch the mode dial flip itself each time intensity reaches 2.5 — a gold tick per ceremony. Each flip lands the spiral on the new mode's decaying axis and the escalation collapses, regrows in the other geometry, and is caught again. The pair never breaks.
Every quarrel, everywhere
Watzlawick carried the complementary spiral into the clinic as the pursuer–distancer pattern: she raises the subject because he goes quiet; he goes quiet because she raises the subject. Each experiences their own move as a reasonable response and the other's as the cause — a dispute about where the loop "starts" that belongs to punctuation. The symmetrical current is just as common: two colleagues matching each other's visible overtime until both burn out; siblings escalating achievements for a parent's attention; two nations reading each other's procurement as provocation and answering in kind — Lewis Fry Richardson wrote nearly these equations for armament in the same decade Bateson was in New Guinea. In every case the fuel is the same: the response to intensity is more intensity, matched or inverted.
The checks are just as recognisable. The couple's private joke that punctures a dominance spiral — the dominant one made absurd, the withdrawn one laughing — is a small naven: a licensed, temporary inversion of the relation that spends the accumulated charge. Treaties, referees, and HR departments are external constraint: a wall placed where ±3 sits in the model. And the relationships that last are the mixed ones — rivals at the crossword, complementary in a crisis, taking turns at each pole — because holding both currents keeps |c| small, and a small |c| means the everyday flare-ups die out on their own. Bateson's typology reads, in the end, as a design rule: a relationship running on one current alone is an instrument tuned to destroy itself.
Neighbouring concepts
Schismogenesis is the special case of vicious circles where the loop runs through exactly two people and acquires a geometry — ray or wedge. Punctuation explains why each side sincerely believes the other started it: both are inside one cumulative process, chopping it into cause and effect at different joints. And double contingency is the moment before — two open response-functions meeting for the first time, before their reactions have locked into either of Bateson's two grooves.

Where it tears
The dial holds μ fixed while the model runs; living pairs flip between matching and opposing within a single exchange, and often disagree about which mode they are in. The fixed mode is a laboratory abstraction — useful for isolating the two geometries, false to the fluency with which people move between them; the naven preset restores that motion only on a trigger.
Nobody has estimated a reactivity gain for a marriage or a cooling constant for a rivalry. The numbers here are illustrative dynamics chosen to make the two shapes visible, and the growth-rate formula is a property of this toy, not of Iatmul society. What the instrument inherits from Bateson is the classification and the runaway claim; every quantity on screen is ours, not his.
The agents here can only react: intensity in, intensity out. Real parties sometimes escalate as deliberate strategy — brinkmanship, a calculated show of force — and sometimes look one move ahead and simply step out of the loop. Agency can exit the spiral in ways a differential equation cannot, which is why de-escalation is a skill rather than a parameter setting.
