Proof only the real
thing can afford.

Loyalty, ability, devotion — the things that matter most are the ones you cannot see. So how do you ever believe a claim to them? You watch what it cost. A promise is cheap; a price that a faker could never bear is not.

Anyone can say "I'm loyal," "I'm skilled," "I'll stay." Words are free, so words prove nothing — the liar says them as fluently as the honest one. The only claims that carry information are the ones that are expensive to make, and expensive in a very particular way: costly enough that someone who didn't have the quality would find the price not worth paying. The tattoo, the grueling apprenticeship, the enormous ring, the peacock's absurd tail — each is believed precisely because a pretender would be ruined by it.

That's the whole trick, and it's a knife-edge. If the signal is too cheap, fakers send it too and it means nothing. If it's too dear, even the genuine can't afford it and it goes unsent. Credibility lives only in the band between — where the price is more than a faker will pay and less than the real thing will. Below, you can find that band, and watch it open, close, and backfire.

Right now the tattoo costs the faker far more than the genuine. As long as being believed is worth more than the genuine's price but less than the faker's, only the real thing signals — and the signal is trusted completely.

The separating band

A signal is believed only when a faker won't pay for it.

Two kinds of people can send the signal: the genuine, for whom it costs c_H, and the faker, for whom it costs c_L. Costly signalling only works when the faker's cost is the higher one — the tattoo hurts more when the loyalty behind it is missing, the degree is harder when the aptitude isn't there. Being taken as genuine is worth B to whoever pulls it off. So each type sends the signal exactly when it pays: genuine signals if B > c_H, faker signals if B > c_L.

Those two thresholds carve the value of belief into three worlds. If B < c_H, the prize isn't worth the price to anyone — the signal goes unsent, and stays silent. If B > c_L, it's worth it to everyone, faker included — so the signal pools: both send it, and seeing it tells you nothing. Only in the band c_H < B < c_L does the signal separate: the genuine send it, the faker declines, and its mere presence proves the quality. Credibility isn't a property of the signal — it's a property of the gap between two costs.

Read the plot: each line is a type's payoff from signalling, B − c, as the value of belief slides along the axis. Where a line rises above zero, that type chooses to signal. The green band is exactly the stretch where the gold line (genuine) has crossed above zero but the crimson line (faker) has not — the only place a signal means what it claims.

What to try

Open the band, close it, break it.

Slide value of being believed from left to right. At first it's below both costs: the marker sits in the silent zone and the belief-given-signal reads as undefined — nobody bothers. Push it past the genuine's cost and you enter the green band: only the genuine signal, and the trust in the signal snaps to 100%. Push it past the faker's cost too and the band ends — the faker joins in, and the signal's credibility collapses back to the base rate p, no more informative than a coin.

Now attack the gap itself. Drag the faker's cost c_L down toward the genuine's c_H: the green band narrows, and the range of situations where honesty can prove itself shrinks with it. Drag c_L below c_H — make faking the cheaper option — and the band inverts into red: now only fakers find the signal worth sending, so its presence is evidence against the quality. The instrument computes every threshold and every belief from the two costs; nothing about "credible" is asserted by hand.

The mapping

Tattoos, degrees, and grand gestures.

The unseeable quality is loyalty, competence, commitment, health — the thing a receiver would pay to know and a sender can't simply show. The signal is the visible, costly act attached to it: the gang tattoo, the diploma, the years of training, the ring that costs three months' salary, the grand romantic sacrifice. What makes any of them work is never the act itself but the differential cost — that it would hurt a pretender more than it hurts the real thing. Loyalty makes a permanent mark bearable; disloyalty makes it a cage. Aptitude makes a hard degree survivable; its absence makes it agony.

This is why cheap talk is worthless and why the most convincing proofs of devotion are the ones that cost the giver dearly. It's also why credibility is fragile in a precise way: anything that lowers the faker's cost — an easy loophole, a way to buy the tattoo without the loyalty, a diploma mill — closes the band and drains the signal of meaning. The signal was never the point. The unbearable price to a pretender was.

A signal informs only if it's costly to fake. Words, promises, and effortless gestures sit at zero cost, so both types send them — they can't separate anyone. Believe the acts a pretender couldn't afford.

Credibility lives in c_L − c_H, the extra a faker would pay. Shrink that gap and honesty loses its way to prove itself; anything that lets pretenders pay the same price kills the signal, however sincere the genuine still are.

A signal so expensive even the real thing won't send it protects no one — the band needs a ceiling as well as a floor. Devotion that demands ruin from everyone isn't a test of love; it's just a wall.

The honest model

What's really under the hood.

This is a two-type Spence signalling game, reduced to its bones. A sender is genuine with prior probability p or a faker otherwise. Sending the signal yields the benefit B of being believed and costs c_H or c_L by type; not sending yields the baseline. Each type signals exactly when its payoff B − c is positive, which the panel evaluates directly to decide who sends.

From those decisions it names the regime and computes the receiver's rational belief by Bayes' rule: if only the genuine signal, seeing the signal implies genuine with probability one; if both signal, the signal is uninformative and the posterior equals the prior p; if only fakers signal, the posterior is zero. The gold and crimson lines are the two payoff functions B − c plotted against B; the green band is literally the interval between their zero-crossings. Change any slider and thresholds, band, and beliefs recompute — none of the verdicts are hard-coded.

Where the metaphor tears

The proof is paid for in pure waste.

The signal's cost is burned, not transferred — the tattoo's pain, the peacock's tail, the years spent on a credential that taught nothing help no one. Separating equilibria are socially expensive: society buys trust with deadweight loss. A world that needs ever-costlier proofs of loyalty is not healthier for it; it's poorer, having spent real resources to establish what honesty alone could have conveyed if only talk were credible.

The costs must track the quality — and often don't.

The whole engine assumes the faker's cost is higher because they lack the quality. But a rich pretender can buy the ring, endure the tattoo, sit out the degree — their cost is low for reasons unrelated to loyalty or skill. When cost correlates with wealth or grit rather than the trait, the signal separates the advantaged from the disadvantaged, not the genuine from the fake, and dresses privilege up as proof.

Bands drift; yesterday's proof is today's noise.

The model is a frozen snapshot; real signalling is an arms race. Fakers find cheaper counterfeits, technologies lower the cost, and a signal that once separated slides into pooling — the suit, the college degree, the blue checkmark all inflated this way. A costly signal is credible only until the world learns to fake it cheaply, at which point the price was paid for nothing.
