Choose Fading traces. The environment forgets faster than action can stabilize it; every wave must rediscover the route.
communicoupling
An ant finds food, returns with a chemical line, and makes the next ant more likely to take the same route. A developer closes a ticket, a shopper empties a shelf, a walker wears a line through grass. Nobody has to address anybody. The changed environment carries the consequence of one action into the next.
Pierre-Paul Grassé called this stigmergy: indirect coordination through traces. The trace is neither a plan nor a commander. It is a locally readable difference that recruits more action, and therefore more trace. Drag the dials and watch useful memory become noise, or harden into a path the group can no longer reconsider.

Choose Early lock-in, then request several new runs. Strong, durable traces amplify whichever route receives an early lead—even when it is longer.
the mechanism
Each wave chooses between a short route and a long one. Most walkers weight the two routes by their current trace; explorers ignore it. A completed trip deposits reinforcement divided by travel cost, so the shorter route usually earns more trace per unit time. Evaporation removes a fraction before the next wave arrives. No walker sees the global pattern, and none needs to know another walker exists.
This is positive feedback with an external memory. Reinforcement makes successful behavior easier to repeat; evaporation keeps the memory revisable; exploration supplies alternatives. Coordination lives in the ratio among all three. The same mechanism can discover an efficient route, preserve a random mistake, or dissolve into perpetual rediscovery.
the social payoff
Issue queues, edit histories, inventory gaps, citation trails, and worn paths all let later participants orient themselves from residue rather than instruction. The trace may be intentionally communicative, but it need not be. What matters is that it changes the probability of a succeeding action.

where it tears
Ant pheromone is not a five-star review bought by the seller. People anticipate being read, conceal residue, manufacture popularity, and erase inconvenient history.
Who may write, see, rank, or delete a trace is a political arrangement. A platform selects which residues become legible and which disappear.
The busy path records use, not why it was used. Following it can reproduce yesterday's constraints after their reasons have disappeared.
