Only variety absorbs variety — the law, the drill it demands, the bill it runs up, and the discount that makes it payable.
Ashby's law states the ground rule: a regulator holds a disturbance only if it can produce at least as many distinct responses as the disturbance has forms.
The bill for the drill: each independent dimension of variation multiplies the space of cases, and any fixed repertoire covers a vanishing fraction of it.
The discount. Variety is counted in coordinates, and a well-chosen basis makes most of the space irrelevant — the repertoire you need shrinks with the description.

Who fixes the terms a situation is argued in — the act that installs them, the consensus that holds them, the discipline of choosing them, the mathematics of swapping them.
The act itself: one utterance installs the terms — what kind of scene this is, what counts as relevant — that every later utterance will be judged inside.
What the act leaves behind when it takes. Thomas's theorem: a definition treated as real is real in its consequences, because everyone now acts inside it.

The practical answer to the ceiling. Language spends roughly half its length repeating itself, and that spending is what carries a sentence across a noisy room.
Bateson finds the engine between people: each side's response is the other side's provocation, and the pattern amplifies until something breaks or a counter-loop cuts in.

Where change refuses to be gradual: a smooth cause with a sudden effect, the crowd that decides all at once, the signal that inverts at a line, and the discipline of watching pressure build.
The engine: the control parameter moves smoothly while the order parameter waits, then jumps. Marriages, faiths, and regimes end "suddenly" on a Tuesday, and afterward everyone agrees it had been coming for years.
The threshold socialized: each person moves when enough others already have, and the distribution of those trigger points — never the average mood — decides whether a spark cascades or dies with one missing follower.
A threshold inside one act: below the line of established standing, skipping the signal reads as lacking it; above the line, the same silence becomes the strongest signal there is. One utterance, two meanings, and the boundary is the speaker's security.
The move that faces the jump before it comes: walk the situation asking what is beginning and what can no longer be reversed, so the pressure that will one day clear its threshold gets seen while it is still pressure.

How to bind yourself well: test the commitment before it sets, time the setting, then reckon with what it locks in and whom it obligates.
The test before the bond: assume the plan has already failed and write the history of why. Prospective hindsight surfaces the reasons ordinary doubt misses.

Observation is a position: watch another watcher, turn the watching inward, learn how watchers read you, then pay the arithmetic every watcher owes.
Meanwhile the observers are watching you: audiences read utterances as membership displays, and the display transmits whether or not you meant to send it.

The turn that hands itself onward: the ceremony that keeps it, the phase drilled as a method, the mathematics that makes the orbit normal, the break where turning fails, and the gain arithmetic under it all.
The wheel entire, kept as ceremony: five phases — begin, unfold, hold, refine, reserve — each handing the turn to the next, and trouble read from the phase where the turning sticks.
One phase stepped out of the wheel and drilled: Water — held potential — becomes a scheduled pause with a return date, and the reserve does work the grind cannot.
What ceremony practises, mathematics licenses: two coupled variables trace a closed orbit around a balance neither rests at, and oscillation turns out to be the equilibrium — the cycle as normal behaviour.
The warning at the fourth stop: some wheels never come back around — a coupled system holds one state past its warrant, then snaps to another, and the turn becomes a one-way door.
